View from I-House

Bonjour !

In California I discovered new passions, and one of them is photography!

I am sure you will agree with me that the Golden State is an absolutely beautiful place! It is so stunning I have found myself exploring and shooting more than ever before, to ultimately share with friends and family how splendid this place is. With breathtaking sunsets, a unique combination of city and nature, and amazing weather, the Bay Area is a fantastic playground for any photography enthusiast. No wonder there is such a large photography community here.

The best part is that you don’t even have to go far to experience some of the best views of the Bay Area. Berkeley has arguably better sunsets than San Francisco because you see the city, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. Actually you don’t even have to get out of I-House, if you have a Bay View room then you are in luck! One can’t get tired of such magnificent sunset every evening.

Today I am writing about the gorgeous view you get from I-House. In the future I will share other spots where you can enjoy some dazzling views of the Bay Area, so stay tuned!

Tip: If you don’t have a Bay View room you can go to the 7th floor I-House lounge! The three photos above were shot from there.

Enjoy the view!

Alternatives to Attending a Football Game

Maybe you “forgot” to pick up your free ticket for the Cal game from the Program Office. Or maybe you are one of the lucky few that already has their first round of midterm exams coming up barely one month into the fall semester. Maybe you find American Football incredibly dull, or maybe you just think there are better things to do than spend your afternoon crammed into the student section of Memorial Stadium cheering on Cal as they continue their best winning streak in years (fingers crossed!).

Cal Memorial Stadium on Game Day

Cal Memorial Stadium on Game Day

Whether you are an avid Cal fan who sweats blue and gold or you don’t even know what a touchdown is, it is possible to go your entire time at Cal without going to a Cal football game. While it’s not something that I’m proud of, I can say that I never attended a game while I went to Cal. I always intended to go to at least one, but somewhere between the ever-accumulating piles of readings, problem sets, papers, and exams, shifts working for I-House’s Events Department, and weekend trips and shenanigans with friends, I never ended up actually going. Whatever the case is, eventually you are going to need a break from the books or whatever else you are doing while holed up in your dorm room. Luckily, you live in the San Francisco Bay Area- one of the greatest metropolitan areas in the world! And while we are in a drought, there is no shortage of things to do. Below is a starter list of things to do in Berkeley if you can’t make it to the next home game.

For the Foodie

The Bay Area is well known for its diverse and excellent cuisine. As the cities of this great metropolis blend into one another, there is no end to the amount of fine dining. But even just within the Berkeley city limits, there are tons of world-class restaurants and dives alike to suit any taste or wallet.

One of the best weekends of my first Cal Football Season was Big Game weekend in late October. I had decided to skip the game because I had a bad cold and a load of work to do. Unfortunately, as per usual during home games, the Wi-Fi and Verizon 3G services went out all over campus from 7am until the game was over. All my I-House friends had gotten tickets (rightfully so!), and I didn’t want to spend the whole day in bed, stressed out because I couldn’t get any work done and wishing I was at the game with everyone else, while I got the play-by-play of the game from the loud speaker blaring through the window of my dorm room. Luckily, I have the best mom in the world and she only lived an hour away.

Pumpkin Soup at Chris Thai Cuisine on Shattuck Ave, Berkeley

Pumpkin Soup at Chris Thai Cuisine on Shattuck Ave.

After running down to Café Milano (the closest place I could get cell service), I called her panicking over what I should do. She battled the traffic to get to Berkeley as quickly as possible and we found a Thai restaurant on Shattuck (Chris Thai Cuisine). In the middle of fall and pumpkin-flavored everything, we had the pumpkin soup and shrimp Pad Thai and it was delightful. In the end, even though Cal was obliterated by Stanfurd, it ended up being a really good day.

For the Shopaholic

Like food, the Bay Area has excellent shopping. From designer boutiques to thrift stores and small antique shops, there is something for everyone. While most stores in Berkeley will require you to fork over your dinner budget for the rest of the semester, window-shopping is not a crime, bring a camera and a friend and go to town exploring the city and refining your fashion sense a la California.

For the Gym Rat (or the Couch Potato)

Take advantage of UC Berkeley’s recreational resources. From the RSC to Strawberry Canyon and even activities down at the Berkeley Marina, Cal’s Rec Sports department has something for everyone. Whether you just want to stay in shape or you want to try something new, like Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, check out the Cal Rec Sports website to see all the available opportunities and class schedules.

For the Urban Geographer

There is so much more to Berkeley than the University of California campus. In every direction, there are neighborhoods to explore. From Elmwood in the south, to North Berkeley, the Berkeley Hills in the east and West Berkeley, the City of Berkeley is full of cute houses, shops and restaurants around every corner. If you are taking a class through the College of Environmental Design, exploring Berkeley is a great way to supplement your newfound knowledge and to get to know the city you live in.

Hiking at Lake Anza in Tilden Park

For the Naturalist

In addition to being a thriving urban center, Berkeley and the East Bay are home to a number of state and regional parks that allow you to escape the hullabaloo of city life and game day fever. You can take AC Transit to Tilden Park and Lake Temescal, just two parks within the East Bay Regional Park District. Both are beautiful, have several hiking trails, and are definitely worth an afternoon away from the books. Or if you really can’t afford the break from studying, pack some readings along with a picnic lunch. The Vitamin D will do you good.

———————————————————————————————————

As you can see, there is something for everyone to do in the Berkeley. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more details and tips for weekend fun. Regardless of whether you plan on going to the next game or not, GO BEARS!

At I-House, hosting is fun!

The Host Family Program reception last Sunday at I-House was one of those you never want to leave. We started at 4 pm in the beautiful Heller Patio. The weather was perfect, music from all over the world was playing, refreshments and delicious appetizers were ready as the students and hosts, the true soul of this incredible community, arrived for the festive gathering.

10, 20, 40, 70, wait a minute… Here we are: 120 students, hosts (families and individuals), I-House staff, all celebrating our love for hospitality, our friendship with I-House, our curiosity for each other countries and cultures.

New friendships formed during Host Family reception

Languages mixed, the atmosphere was great. There were invitations, smiles, hugs, plans for the following days and weeks, pictures, a relaxed and sparkling vibe, open minds and open hearts all brought together under the Dome.

Host Families spreading the love…

At 6 pm, when the reception was supposed to end, everybody was still there enjoying that very special moment. We surrendered around 6:45 pm and I bet we all went home very content. We came in as strangers and left as friends. Ah, the miracles of this place!

And then, on Monday, when I thought I had to give up my  “matchmaking” until Spring, here come new families and students who want to join the fun!

Word of mouth proved to be fast! You heard about our patio gathering, you want to be part of the group, you really hope to host this year or to be hosted.  You ask me to restart the process. 🙂

We did well and now, two days after our big start, five more hosts and fifteen more residents are joining the group.  I am thinking of more, new ways to nurture this great group. Stay tuned, there is a lot more coming up!

Host Family Program members, I love you!

Dear members of the Host Family Program, amazing Bay Area families and wonderful International House students, this is my love letter to you.

In the past two months I’ve put all my efforts into building a new, warm, welcoming, interesting, caring Host Family Program. I have studied your applications day and night, I have called you, emailed you, studied your profiles trying to learn your preferences, needs and expectations. I have thought of all possible ways to appreciate the volunteer work of our host families and individuals and to communicate this opportunity to I-House residents.

Waiting for you at I-House

Waiting for you at I-House

While at the Front Desk I have talked to “my” beloved students, trying to guess their thoughts about the Program and their experience here in Berkeley. I have discovered another beautiful group of residents that will fill my working days in the next months and I am so grateful and happy for this.

Then when the time came, and all the hosting families and residents applications were ready, I have put all of myself into the “matchmaking” process!

I have carefully chosen what I think could be the best matches between families and students. I have imagined for each and every host and student the moment you’ll meet and the feelings you’ll have. That very special moment in which a stranger will become a guest, and then a friend, and hopefully an additional family member. I am sure you’ll have fun together and I’ll be always here if you’ll have any need or request once this new life adventure starts.

I myself can’t wait to host my three “I-House new family members” and share with them food, conversations and everyday life in my home, with my family.

These have been amazing (although quite tiring weeks), but here we are. On Sunday, September 14 from 4 to 6 pm in the beautiful International House Heller Patio, we’ll finally all meet and celebrate together our love for hospitality. We are a special community, my friends, as we firmly believe hosting and being hosted leads to learning and to better understanding our complicated world.

I-House Heller Patio almost ready for this coming Sunday reception

I-House Heller Patio almost ready for this coming Sunday reception

I am sure we all value this opportunity as a chance to broaden our horizons and…why not, give back what we have received in the past.

Many of our Host Family Program members have been hosted themselves in the past. I am one of them: I had the privilege to be welcome in a beautiful (I-House!!) family when I first arrived in the US with my husband and son. Those are wonderful memories and led to a long lasting friendship.

And now here we are, all of us, ready to celebrate the warm feeling that comes from hospitality itself. I believe few things are more rewarding and challenging than opening our home door the very first time we meet our guests, ready to share our daily life and welcome whoever comes to our home, ready to change our believes and thoughts or acquire new ones with an open mind and a open heart.

Believe me, I can’t wait for all of us to start this adventure. This part of my job represents the very essence of who I am and what I have done so far and I truly love it.

With an open mind and an open heart I will be at I-House on Sunday afternoon to welcome you all and start this beautiful adventure. Together.

Let’s go to Lake Tahoe!

That’s me diving in Lake Tahoe!

That’s me diving in Lake Tahoe!

Bonjour !

Living in Berkeley is very enjoyable thanks to all the diverse people and the endless activities you can do in the Bay Area. But fun activities are far from being limited to the Bay Area. Northern California is like a treasure chest, it offers many gems that are close to Berkeley, and Lake Tahoe is one of them! So let’s dive into details Tahoe!

With about twenty other I-House buddies we rented a couple vans and headed to Lake Tahoe. After a long drive (it normally takes three hours to drive, but we hit traffic, had a mechanical problem, and made a few stops) we finally made it to the house we rented in South Lake Tahoe. Fortunately, the house was huge, with a large kitchen and dining room, a pool table, and a hot-tub! After enjoying a copious dinner we had a blast hanging out at the house and getting to know each other!

Excited to be in Tahoe!

Excited to be in Tahoe!

So why is Lake Tahoe awesome? First Tahoe is just a gorgeous place! The water comes from melting snow so it is very clear, and the surrounding mountains create a unique panorama. Imagine yourself sitting on the sand, with clear water in front of you, and mountains in the distance, it is quite unreal. Lake Tahoe is actually the largest alpine lake in North America, so you do not feel being in front of a lake. You really have this beach feeling, but with a unique horizon that is filled with mountains!

Lake Tahoe: sun, sand, water, and mountains

Lake Tahoe: sun, sand, water, and mountains

Secondly there are tons of activities to do! The beach offers all the water activities you want such as kayaking, paddle boarding, boating… The mountains are perfect for hikes and getting to high vantage points. Although it gets cold at night I strongly recommend going for a short walk/hike and stargazing. Being at high elevation and away from city lights reveals so many stars. If you just want to take it easy and chill on the beach, that’s also possible thanks to the peacefulness of Tahoe.

Tip: go to Emerald Bay, this is my favorite spot! The blue water, the surrounding trees, and the small island in the middle create a beautiful view! It’s also not just about the destination; the journey is a lot of fun. The drive to Emerald Bay is so scenic and exciting, or scary, I will let you decide.

What does Free Speech mean to you?

As the campus celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement this fall, the Office of Communications and Public Affairs has created a website at http://fsm.berkeley.edu/ that provides a historical timeline, a list of upcoming events and more. It happened 50 years ago, but the Free Speech Movement left a strong legacy at UC Berkeley and in the lives and public service work of many students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The Public Affairs office is interested in identifying a few international students who would be interested in talking to reporters, as needed, about what the Free Speech Movement means to them.  If you would be happy to help, please email Gretchen Kell, director of special projects and outreach, at gkell@berkeley.edu.

Freedom's OratorThere is another important website for students participating in the On the Same Page program, http://fsm-onthesamepage.berkeley.edu/, which provided this summer to all incoming freshmen and transfer students a copy of a biography of FSM leader Mario Savio called “Freedom’s Orator” by New York University Professor Robert Cohen. A few dozen courses this fall are being taught about the Free Speech Movement that use the book as a source of discussion.

We also welcome photos and stories from 1960s alumni about living at International House during this groundbreaking era. Comment below or send email and photos to ihalumni@berkeley.edu for possible inclusion in the Fall I-House Times newsletter.

The Language Game – Part II

Ok, dearest residents. You really follow this blog, don’t you?  How do I know? Well, last week the Language Game went kind of viral.

Some residents came to the Front Desk to ask for a tennis racquet and would not give me their IDs before I had guessed which language they speak or which country they come from.

One of you caught me by surprise while I was writing a report, so I misunderstood your accent (Germany not Belgium, so sorry Jan!). I got all the Latin American countries right though and even practiced a bit of Chinese here and there.

On one day there were seven of us (me and six residents) playing the Language Game at the Front Desk. It was so nice, we laughed a lot and a new group of friends was born. At home that evening, my husband reminded me about the Flag Game and the Food Game, two variations on the same theme we used to play when we were younger. We practiced it at home with our children and in few seconds the I-House spirit was recreated in our kitchen.

So, thank you I-House residents for reading this blog and for being so smart and nice. The hours at the Front Desk would be much longer without those friendly chats and cultural exchanges we have. Through you I am traveling around the world again, as I had been doing for so many years. Grazie mille – and thank you in every language that I have yet to learn.

So, now, ready for the Food Game? Try to guess what’s the signature dish of the countries your I-House friends come from. Be as specific as you can, no generic pasta or pizza allowed. And…see you at the Front Desk! 🙂

Top 3 reasons to apply for the Intercultural Leadership Initiative

by Jess Delegencia,  ILI Coordinator

For residents and student staff, the Center for Intercultural Leadership (CIL) invites you to apply for its Intercultural Leadership Initiative (ILI) this fall.

Intercultural Leadership Initiative

The ILI Spring 2014 cohort, at their celebration and granting of certificates

Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Apply:

1. It’s going to change your life. ILI is a learning laboratory that emphasizes your transformation, potential, and effectiveness as an intercultural leader. The self-awareness and skills you will gain will make a positive impact in your life here at I-House, at UC Berkeley, and beyond. And it will prepare you to be more effective as a global leader.

2. It’s free. While certification programs can be expensive, International House at UC Berkeley provides the ILI program for its residents and student staff at no charge. If admitted to the program, this is an exclusive benefit only available to you as a resident or student staff at I-House.

3. It gets you certified. Upon successful completion of ILI requirements in the fall, you receive a Certificate in Intercultural Leadership. Increasingly, future employers are looking for specific skills in leadership and intercultural competency. ILI provides you with credentials in both of these fields.

For more info and how to apply, please visit: ihouse.berkeley.edu/ILI
Eligibility requirements apply. Space is limited.

Application deadline is Monday, September 8.
