The Power of Community: How I-House Brought Bonnie and Peter Together

With graduation season right around the corner (and my own coming up next month!), I’ve been reflecting on this bittersweet time—filled with nostalgia for all the “lasts” on the beautiful Berkeley campus and at I-House, hope for all the exciting “firsts” still ahead, the adrenaline of this crowning milestone, and above all, deep pride in how far we’ve come. It’s a season to celebrate not just achievements, but the people who made the journey meaningful.

After sharing my blog post on the Legacy of Love and Lifelong Connections at I-House, I received a heartfelt comment from Bonnie Veaner, an alumna from 1983–85. She shared a glimpse of her own love story and fond memories from her time at I-House. I reached out to learn more—and what she said was so special, I knew it deserved to be shared.

I-House Friendships and Community

“I loved meeting people from all over the world,” Bonnie reflects. “Living at I-House taught me that no matter our ethnicity, religion, or background, we all want the same things—peace, friendship, and prosperity. If we focus on our shared humanity, we absolutely can learn to get along. That message is needed now more than ever.”

Bonnie’s words echo the very heart of I-House—the power of community, mutual understanding, and shared experiences that bridge cultures and inspire a more peaceful, interconnected world. Her time at I-House was filled with vibrant friendships that became lifelong communities.

Bonnie shared a cherished photo from a surprise birthday party in February 1985, hosted by I-House friends.

Over the years, many of those friendships have endured. Bonnie is still in touch with residents Tracy Charlton—whom she considers her sister—as well as Rabbi Michael Beals and Shelley Bumpas, both of whom she has reconnected with thanks to social media. She also keeps in touch with Al Duenas, who worked in the I-House kitchen while studying at UC Berkeley.

“Michael once held an international Passover seder in one of the communal rooms. He invited everyone, regardless of their background, to enjoy the celebration. We all called him ‘Rabbi’ back then—we knew who he was even before he did! And a great Rabbi he has become.”

From Childhood Neighbors to Lifelong Partners

Bonnie Veaner (IH 1983–85) and Peter Parks (IH 1984–85) first met at I-House in 1984. At the time, Bonnie was an undergraduate studying anthropology, and Peter was pursuing his Ph.D. in agricultural economics and marketing. They soon discovered that they had so much in common—they lived just a few blocks from each other during their childhood, rode the same school bus to their elementary school, knew so many of the same people, and their dads even worked at the same university for a time. Yet, it took I-House to bring Bonnie and Peter together!

I-House Reflections and Memories

Bonnie also shared some of her favorite (and funniest!) memories from her time at I-House:

“The evening coffee socials in the Great Hall—lovingly nicknamed ‘The Grateful Hall’—were a wonderful way to connect. I also remember playing Pac-Man with Vrej Kaprielian, the undisputed champion, in the café with other students to unwind after midterms.”

One memory stands out vividly:

“I was in my 7th floor dorm room up on the top bunk, studying while listening to Carole King’s Tapestry album. I’d left the arm up on the record player, so the album kept repeating. As Carole King sang ‘I Feel the Earth Move,’ suddenly I did feel the earth move. The bunk bed shook and the windows rattled—EARTHQUAKE! My childhood emergency drill training kicked in and before I knew it, I was bracing myself in the doorway. Then I ran down seven flights of stairs and out onto Bancroft Avenue, where I found my roommate, Sabine, who hadn’t even noticed the quake! It was just a 3.0, but on that 7th-floor bunk bed, it really felt like something.”

40 Years Since Tassels Turned

In the spirit of graduation, Bonnie shared a proud memory from her own journey—a special moment captured in May 1985: “It was such a proud day. Peter gave me the necklace I’m wearing as a graduation gift.”

Legacy of Love and Lifelong Connections at I-House Berkeley

International House has long been a place where cross-cultural connection is at the heart of friendships and memories that transcend time and space. This February, let’s celebrate the enduring love and lifelong connections that begin at I-House.

Timeless Ties

For almost ten decades, I-House residents have been exposed to cultures, people, and worldviews different from their own. The friendships that grow from these experiences are central to the purpose and legacy of I-House.

Creating Community Through Harmony: The Power of Music at I-House Berkeley

December marks the start of the holiday season across a variety of cultures and is brimming with diverse cultural traditions across the world. Whether it is Christmas caroling, drumming circles at Kwanzaa celebrations, or Chinese New Year Gong Xi, music is an integral part of the holiday season and brings communities together during this festive time of year. At I-House, residents from over 80 countries come together to celebrate each others’ cultural holiday musical traditions.

When you’re lounging in the Great Hall where random musical gatherings spring to life, you will experience music’s spontaneity. Strolling by the Hall of History or Chevron Auditorium, musical creativity and performance fill the air. Residents enjoy the cultural melodies that echo from Heller Patio on Wednesday evenings during DiversiTea & Coffee Hour. Even walking through resident hallways, the sounds of practice and playlists drift behind the doors. You are bound to get a taste of the diverse musical talent of I-House residents! From impromptu jam sessions to cultural performances, everyday life at I-House is rich with a vibrant soundtrack. Music unites the community as a universal language. It transcends all borders.

The Great Hall: Holiday Harmonies

One of the hallmarks of the Great Hall that I-House alumni recall with much nostalgia is the large grand piano. The piano has witnessed generations of talented residents gracing its keys and making music that captivates everyone in the hall. Oftentimes, a resident starts playing the piano and more and more residents join in to sing along to the tunes – from the Great Hall floor as well as the balconies that overlook the piano.

“After every weekly Coffee Hour and Sunday Supper, we would gather in the Great Hall. Someone would play the piano, and we’d sing folk songs from around the world.”

Embracing Free Speech: Insights from I-House at UC Berkeley

By Shaun Carver, Executive Director and CEO

I am proud to share the results of our recent resident survey on free speech, which reveals a remarkable sentiment among our community. In a time when many college campuses across the U.S. are struggling with issues surrounding free expression, I-House stands out. An impressive 88% of our residents feel safe expressing their views within our multicultural environment.

A Positive Environment for Open Dialogue

Conducted in November 2024, our survey contradicts findings from organizations like the Knights Foundation and FIRE, which report low levels of comfort in expressing opinions on many campuses. At I-House, 94% of our students feel comfortable sharing controversial opinions with fellow residents, 83% are at ease discussing their views with other UC Berkeley students, and 82% are comfortable engaging with their professors.

Breaking Bread, Building Bonds: How Food Brings the I-House Community Together

The I-House community is rooted in its common commitment to intercultural exchange and understanding, but arguably, at the true heart of I-House is our shared passion for food. From sharing everyday meals at the Dining Commons to trying cultural snacks and delicacies featured in every Wednesday’s DiversiTEA and Coffee Hour, living at I-House is like taking a food tour around the world. Food is at the core of what it means to be a part of the I-House community and as it becomes embedded in our everyday routines, its significance to the community is perhaps easy to overlook. As we approach Thanksgiving, it seems timely to reflect on and appreciate the ways that food brings the I-House family together, not only during this special time but all year round.

Then and Now: Sunday Supper in the Chevron Auditorium

To say that food is at the center of life at I-House is not an understatement as sharing meals was a part of what eventually led to the inception of the first International House.

Unity in Motion: Bridging Cultures Through Dance at International House

Picture this: As the sun sets and the sky transforms into a canvas of brilliant hues, I-House residents begin trickling onto the Heller Patio. The air is filled with warmth, excitement, and festivity. Girls wear flowing chaniya cholis and lehengas (traditional South Asian long skirts) adorned with elaborate embroidery and mirrors, while the guys don vibrant kurtas. Residents form large concentric circles, performing and chanting the movements for the Indian folk garba dance steps I had taught them moments ago: “Forward, forward, back, back, forward, forward, spin!” The energy is contagious as people pull their friends—beginners and skilled dancers alike!—into the circles, while residents overlooking the patio rush downstairs to join the celebration. The spirit of unity and inclusiveness flourishes as everyone moves together under the warm lights of the Heller Patio.

As the night progresses, the rhythms intensify. Upon my instruction, everyone grabs a pair of dandiyas (colorful sticks) and forms long lines facing each other. They joyfully strike their sticks together in a repetitive dance sequence, sharing smiles, laughter, and encouraging nods. The lines flow in opposite directions, and with each cycle of beats, everyone faces a new partner, building connections through this vibrant social dance. The atmosphere is captivating and magical, as residents sway, clap, sing, laugh, and dance barefoot to the beats of the dhol in their colorful ethnic attire–creating a kaleidoscope of moving hues. During breaks, people snack on hot, savory samosas, attempting to quickly refuel before eagerly diving back into the group dance.

From Bangkok to Berkeley: My Journey to International House

I-House facade
I-House at golden hour, my favorite time of day to appreciate my new home

I was weary from my 24-hour journey from Bangkok to Berkeley across two flights, three airports, and two car rides when I arrived at the tiled steps of I-House for the first time. Suddenly, any sign of weariness melted away as the building gleamed in the afternoon sun, what I now know as a familiar sight each time I return after a long day of classes. Buzzing with anticipation, I dragged my two suitcases behind me and from the moment I first walked through its doors, I-House exceeded my expectations and continues to surprise me. Less than a year ago, I couldn’t have imagined living under the same roof with students from 82 different countries. Yet, each step of my journey has led me to this moment.

Reflecting on My Time at International House, UC Berkeley

Looking back, moving into International House was a decision that forever shaped my journey at UC Berkeley. I can still see that moment clearly—my parents by my side as I stood at the front desk, surrounded by six oversized suitcases, a mix of excitement and nerves filling the air as I awaited check-in. It was on that very day, during the I-House tour, that I met my first friend. Little did I know, that brief encounter was just the beginning of an extraordinary international adventure that would change me in ways I never imagined.

My single room on the fifth floor became a sanctuary, offering a stunning bay view where I could watch the sunset behind the Golden Gate Bridge each evening. Though the space was modest, it had a way of feeling just right, like it was made to hold not just my belongings, but my dreams and hopes as well.

International House: Spring Semester in Review

There is less than a month remaining at I-House for residents who leave in the spring, and my heart gets ever heavier with the impending day of moving out. Like most great things in life that arrive strong and live short, I am heartbroken at the end of my dalliance with I-House and extremely grateful for the months of learning, connection, and enrichment I was treated to.

If I were a gambling man, I’d bet that I am not the only resident going through these emotions. My peers and friends at International House have a gleam in their eyes and a similar fondness in their hearts for the time we have shared.

As I come to terms with the end of my time here, I look to cope through reminiscing and appreciating the work of the I-House Resident Council, Programs Office, Communications Office, Staff, and most of all the residents themselves in putting together an exceptional year – one which I will carry close to my heart for decades to come.

Celebrating Global Cultural Heritage: The International Culture Festival

A truly eventful year for I-House residents ended with another edition of the annual International Cultural Festival, prepared by the Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership and Programs team. On Saturday, April 27, we opened the door to welcome over 100 guests from outside the House and to our 600 residents, who joined us to celebrate the global cultural heritage. During 4 months of work, the Center’s Program Lead Team worked hard to put together the festival, with 16 student- or association-led cultural booths, 8 performances, and the participants’ countless smiles.
