The many colors of hospitality at I-House

What is Hospitality to You?

I have asked myself this question many times while traveling around the world. As the I-House Host Family Program Manager this year, hospitality and its many colors are now a constant thought in my everyday life. Hospitality is without any doubt a gift to either friends or strangers. The gift of time spent with our guests, the gift of a good meal prepared just for the pleasure of sitting with other people around the table, the gift of a conversation, the gift of our attention and love. It may be the most precious gift, given the busy lives and packed schedules that we all have (students included) around here. I keep this in mind when I talk about the Host Family Program to new potential hosts, knowing how valuable their volunteer job will be. And I am very grateful when I see that, despite their many daily commitments, I-House hosts are always available for our residents. The pleasure to simply give something of ourselves to young, international individuals does the trick. We open our homes, cook, take our students to a local restaurant, to a concert, to a movie, spend time together and feel good about it.

However, at I-House, hospitality has many more colors due to the fact that our guests, most of the time, come from very different cultures, have different traditions and sometimes unheard of ways of doing things. When we open our door to them, a new world comes in, and with it, a few challenges we may have not taken into account. What am I going to serve for dinner? Is there any food considered not appropriate in my guest’s world? Is there any comment I should avoid or something I am supposed to say to make them feel at ease? Should I just follow my way of doing things and let my guests adapt to it? After all, isn’t that what they want: to be introduced to the local cultures? Every one of you, Host Family hosts and guests, has developed a special way to answer these questions. But allow me add my two cents here… I am your matchmaker after all, right? And I am a host myself.

When, during the time you spend with your guests (or with your hosts), you experience something unusual, far from your cultural comfort zone, sometimes even opposed to it; when people act in what you think is a “strange” way of behaving, a way you’ll never adopt (just because that is not the way you do things in your everyday world); in that moment, just stop and think of what is going on. You may not be aware of it, but you are traveling, right there, in your own living room. You’re transported to a different country, you’re adding something new to your cosmopolitan education, you’re understanding through hospitality. Members of the Host Family community, know that our whole Program is all about that moment: you’re stepping out of the beaten path, adopting another point of view, shifting your priorities, fully experiencing another human being.

This is how my two little ones are now learning about China, Japan, Korea and Singapore, not from my stories about those countries, not by opening a book or surfing the internet. They are looking at a world map and talking to my wonderful Asian guests, playing with them or asking them about their languages and countries. This is what happened last Sunday when we all gathered to cook pizza together.

And that’s another reason why I am so grateful for having I-House in my life.

Please share stories and anecdotes about your I-House hospitality experience, email me pictures of your gatherings, inspire other members of our community which now counts 56 hosting families and individuals and 91 residents. Yay! And every resident has been matched with one of our hosts!! We are doing great!

The Rooms of Requirement!

Beeping alarms, red laptop eyes, nights deep in books, hasty goodbyes!

Its that time of the year again when the I-House bears raise hands and say – Ah! Midterms. Surprisingly, I wasn’t surprised when a girl asked me yesterday, “I can’t study in my room, where should I go?” After directing her to her Room of Requirement, I realized that a lot of you might be still searching for yours. So, here is the key…

Study Tables in the Library

Study Tables in the Library

More ambient study space in the Library

More ambient study space in the Library

Lets begin with a toast to our library near the dining hall. I bet you already knew about it and so did your fellow housemates. Consequently, it will usually be full (Its still a nice place for a nap). Where else can you go then?

For starters, every floor has a lounge.

The one on the third is a small room without windows right next to the elevator but it has a nice whiteboard, a square table and chairs. In short, its a great place for working with project teams. Fourth floor has a similar lounge and another bigger well ventilated one with a TV set and some couches (Someone is going to kill me for telling this. So, I leave the adventure of finding it to you). Further up on the fifth there is a bigger and door-less version of the whiteboard lounges. This is great for group studies or those small breaks when you need to stretch.

Sixth and seventh floor lounges offer some of the best bay views and a nice cool breeze, in case that one unsolvable problem is heating your head up. There is also a nice TV set on the sixth and both of these lounges take you down the memory lane with pictures of ex-residents who shared the space.

At the top of them all, is the beautiful Lounge of the Ladies on the eighth that looks out to the stars above and Oakland below (and the noisy Frats too if you go further down). A word of caution though – Whoever you are, Whatever you do, Do Not Upset the Ladies! There, I said it.

Moving on, for the main course, I take you to the dining hall. “Wait, weren’t you talking about studying? I thought you just used food as a metaphor.” Right on both accounts. This may come as a revelation but the dining hall is open daily from 9p to 4a as a study place for the residents. Yes, I am serious! Please go, tell your friends and share your surprise.

What do we have for dessert, you my ask! Oh, we got three for you. The computer room is the brightest available study place in the entire house while the lounge right next to the laundry is the coziest.

If you got some printing/scanning related work, need a bright cool place to study or would like to save some time while your clothes get washed, now you know where to go.

However, if you like to read with a quiet morning breakfast or in more regular hours with a lot of people around or just in the open with fresh air clearing up your thoughts, there is the I-house cafe and its nice little patio.

To round it all up with a coffee, let me take you to the evergreen home of  coffee hours – the Great Hall. Huge couches, tables, chairs, chandeliers, lamps, it has got them all. Archaic yet the most artistic study space of them all, it also flaunts two open mezzanine lounges on both sides with nice study spaces and outlets for your faithful electronic friends.

All Those Spaces….are just for you. Come finals and they all fill up too.

Wait! Don’t Panic! Given the all time quiet hours rule during finals, there is one more place that will always be open. Just step out of your room and you will find the vast carpeted hallways silently waiting.

Intense study sessions in the hallways

The next time you want to venture out looking for a study place at I-house, remember –
If you have to ask, you will never know. If you know, you need only ask.

P.S. – Need a study break? Read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

Live music in the park and Blue Angels air show

Bonjour !

It is October, and the month kicks off with two big annual events one cannot miss! The first one is a huge music festival in Golden Gate Park this weekend (October 3-5) and the second one is an impressive air show in the San Francisco Bay next weekend (October 9-13).

Hardly Strictly Music Festival. Photo: http://eastbayexpress.com

San Francisco hosts several music festivals every year, and the two most popular ones are Outside Lands in the summer and Hardly Strictly in the fall. While they are both very popular and draw thousands of people to Golden Gate Park over a weekend, the latter is completely free! That’s right, there will be over 100 artists performing on seven stages for free. With this fully loaded lineup it is impossible to see them all, so feel free to look at the schedule and learn more about the artists on the festival’s website.

Next weekend there is Fleet Week! It is a military ships parade and an air show that can be seen from the San Francisco Bay waterfront. If I have to give one reason to go to Fleet Week, I just need two words: Blue Angels. The Blue Angels are the United States Navy’s flight demonstration squadron (by the way, the planes sport the Blue and Gold colors, just like Cal) and their pilots are absolutely amazing! The Blue Angels’ maneuvers are so precise and technical they definitely perform one of the best aerobatic demonstrations! More information is available here.

A private, beautiful Library

Managing our Host Family Program, I get to talk even more with you, I-House residents, and I have the privilege to listen to some beautiful beautiful stories.

It happened again recently during one of my “matchmaking sessions” at the Front Desk.

I was going through my folders again and here was Diana asking about her application. She had brought it after 7 pm when I had already left the House and now she was wondering if I had received it. Looking to my forms all I had was a resident from Mozambique looking for a hosting family.

“No Diana, I am sorry, please fill the form out again, all I have is a request from a Mozambican resident.”

“Sure, that’s me, I am from Mozambique.”

Oh.

Diana Quelhas

Diana Quelhas, the Mozambican you would not expect…

And where I was expecting an African student here comes Diana, born in Africa, in beautiful Mozambique, from a Portuguese father and an Indian mother both looking for a better life in that part of the globe.

Diana is a sweet, beautiful woman and she accepts to answer the questions that immediately pop up in my mind. The dormant journalist in me is now awake and wants to know all about her life in Africa. That’s how I discover Diana is an Epidemiologist and that she has worked with an Italian group I used to work for back in Italy.

She is so gracious to share her feelings and thoughts about being an “unusual” African woman. Her connection with her country, Mozambique, is evident and deep. She doesn’t mind traveling around the world for a bit, she has studied in London and is now in Berkeley. But Africa is the place she wants to go back to, her home, Mozambicans being her people.

She has the calm attitude I have frequently noticed in many African women. I ask her more about her country and her family. The conversation becomes more and more interesting. Talking to her is like reading a beautiful book, I just can’t stop. And I invite you to do the same and, while at I-House, to learn from each other as much as you can.

That’s how I sometimes think of you, amazing I-House residents. As beautiful, interesting, brilliant books I have the fortune to open every now and then to discover new things every day.

And that’s when I know I love my job more and more.

Let’s go for a run!

Bonjour !

Last week I told you about a passion shared by many Californians that I embraced, namely photography. Today I want to tell you about another one: sports, more precisely running. I actually do triathlon so I will write about swimming and cycling in future posts.

A couple I-House friends and me joined the Cal Triathlon Team. Fall Camp at Lake Tahoe.

A couple I-House friends and me joined the Cal Triathlon Team. Fall Camp at Lake Tahoe.

I am sure you have noticed that Californians do a lot of sports, for many reasons. First, it is part of the culture. Secondly, the weather is always nice so you can do outdoor sports pretty much all year around. Again, the Bay Area is a fantastic playground! That sounds amazing, right? Here are some running ideas near I-House.

Campus Loop

Campus Loop

For a short run, you can just do a loop around campus. Above is a two-mile loop that will take you by the stadium, Greek Theater, through some nature on campus, and up Bancroft Ave.

Golden Bear Track

Golden Bear Track

If you want to run on a track, there are two tracks on campus: Edwards Track and Golden Bear Track. Edwards Track is a serious eight-lane track while Golden Bear Track feels more casual. The latter is a dirt track behind Clark Kerr Campus at the top of Dwight Way, very close to nature and with beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay. I like it a lot, plus you can go for a short hike in the hills behind campus after running.

Fire Trail

Fire Trail

If you want to escape the everyday life, the most popular running route is the Fire Trail. It starts behind the Strawberry Canyon pool and it is about seven-mile round-trip. While you run up on the trail you will enjoy some majestic views of the Campanile and the San Francisco Bay. I recommend running in the late afternoon and watching the sunset from the top, it is absolutely gorgeous! Don’t forget to bring flashlights with you, otherwise you might end up going down in the dark.
Tip: you can also just hike that trail, bring some wine and cheese to picnic at the top, and enjoy a glorious sunset.

Bay Trail

Bay Trail

Last but not least, running on the Bay Trail is another favorite. It is far, you have to go all the way down to the Berkeley Marina, but it is so worth running there, getting some fresh air, and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, San Francisco, and the Bay Bridge!

Ran the Cologne Half Marathon with an I-House friend two weeks ago

Ran the Cologne Half Marathon with an I-House friend two weeks ago

Now if you tell me that you are not athletic at all and that you cannot run, I will not believe you. Growing up in Paris, in a buzzing city I did very little sports because with all the cars and people, it was just not very appealing. In addition, my family is not really into sports. But in Berkeley I gave it a shot, I did a few runs, went to the pool every now and then, bought a bike to go on rides, until I eventually joined the Cal Triathlon Team with my roommate, which was really fun and motivating! In fact, the past twelve months I have done an Olympic distance triathlon (1,500 m swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run) and four half marathons (the last one being in Cologne, Germany two weeks ago with an I-House friend).  Now our objective is to run a full marathon, doing races is addicting! My point is that unless you try, you cannot say you cannot do sports.

Running on the Golden Gate Bridge at the US Half

Running on the Golden Gate Bridge at the US Half

Running is easy, you just need a pair of shoes, you can change your runs as you want, and you can progress pretty quickly. If you want to get serious about running, it helps grabbing a friend to go for a run and signing up for a race so you have an objective. Fortunately, there are plenty of races in the Bay Area. The next major race is the US Half in San Francisco on November 2nd (registration closes on October 2nd). I did it last year and it is one of the most beautiful races, plus you get to run on the Golden Gate Bridge! How awesome is that?

With that, grab a pair of shoes and go for a run! The best part about Berkeley is that you can quickly escape school, the city, and immerse yourself in nature. Trust me, it is worth the effort and you will feel energized!

A new, vibrant I-House community is born!

Ciao Host Family Program members!

Our new adventure started with a bang on Sunday, September 14, in the beautiful I-House Heller patio when we had our first reception.  There were 125 people (go I-House!) including hosts, I-House staff (hosting families) and residents. The weather was perfect, the vibe wonderful and it was clear to everyone that a new, vibrant, generous, inspiring community was born under the Dome.

In the days following our first event I received emails with your kind and warm comments on the new Host Family Program, as well as more applications from new hosts and residents who want to participate. With such an active and numerous group, matchmaking is very important, but we also need more ways and tools to nurture it.

Brainstorming is on and, after getting the green light from our Director, Hans Giesecke, I am now working on a biweekly newsletter and a Facebook group for our community. We are growing fast and the first meetings between host families and residents have already taken place. I’d love to share the wonderful pictures I am receiving from all of you, the stories, the deep, generous feelings behind all these gatherings, the fun you are having. And I’d love to let you know of all the activities going on here at I-House, a place where I hope you will feel more and more at home.

Let me also share one other positive Host Family Program outcome. After our reception, matchmaking continued as I discovered many affinities between residents members of our community. It was fun and rewarding to see unexpected connections form and to discretely suggest the possibility of new friendships. This way Marc, a future Doctor from Germany is going to meet Diana, an Epidemiologist from Mozambique. They will be hosted by the Tao family where the husband, Keith, is a Physician, in order for them to have a good insight on the medical profession in the US. Another generous family in our Program, Sarah and Ivan Diamond, accepted to talk to Marc as well and give him their point of view on Medicine in the US (Ivan is a well known Professor at USCF School of Medicine).

Dinner at Barney's

Nicole Ruihui Xu with her hosts Gunnar and Vivian Ellam

Email photos of your gatherings to hostfamily@berkeley.edu, like Nicole did after her dinner at Barney’s with her hosts, pictured here.

There will lots of stories to tell, tips to share on how to host and be hosted, cultural differences to be learned. The potential of our community is great and I am totally committed to explore every possibility it offers.

So, stay tuned! There is a lot more coming up in our new Host Family Program. I-House once again invites you to build lifelong memories and meet the world.

Weekend inspiration

Hi all!

Laurie invited me to join the team of I-House bloggers and of course, I gladly accepted her offer. Before I start, let me introduce myself, for those of you that haven’t met me (yet :-)). My name is Koen, I’m 23 years old and was born and raised in The Netherlands. I’ll be studying here at Cal for the Fall ’14 semester as part of my master’s program in Industrial Engineering.

So what will I be writing about? Mostly, just what comes to my mind when I’m writing my blog posts. I figured I would start by sharing some things I like to do, have done, or plan to do in and around Berkeley. So here we go.

Go on a road trip!

Work hard, play hard! After a week of studying, camping in the library and stressing over upcoming homework deadlines (why didn’t I start earlier?), the weekend is there for relaxing. As most of you will know, California has a lot to offer. Here is some inspiration for some nice trips:

Visit Santa Cruz and Monterey
I especially liked Carmel beach, just south of Monterey. Monterey also has a great aquarium, although it is a bit pricey. Tickets are sold online for $35 if you have a college ID. (I went with my parents three years ago, so for me it was free :-))

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Hike in Big Sur
A great 1 hour drive, following Highway 1 south from Monterey, you’ll find Big Sur, a great park with many hiking possibilities. Keep in mind that there is no cellphone reception in this area, so set up a clear meeting point in the park and don’t end up losing everyone like we did.

Big Sur

Big Sur

Visit Lake Tahoe
Nice for swimming and lying on the beach (King’s Beach is the most popular choice, you can also rent jetski’s there), but also for hiking. We did a nice hike in Burton Creek State Park (just north of Tahoe City) that lead up to an amazing view of Lake Tahoe. Also check out Joël’s blog post about Tahoe.

Tahoe Panorama

Tahoe Panorama

All of these destinations are within a 2-4 hour drive from Berkeley if there is no traffic (it took us 7 hours to get to Tahoe during the busy labor day weekend). You can easily rent a car at Oakland airport (Fox is cheap) or even at Berkeley (Hertz). Don’t forget a passport and credit card if you’re the driver, and keep in mind that most car companies charge an additional fee for drivers aged 21-25. Oh, and read up on car insurance here.

Furthermore, instead of booking a hotel, consider renting a house. Just Google ‘house rentals + destinations’ and you’ll find many options, which are often cheaper if you’re with a big group. Below are some pictures of a great house we stayed in near Tahoe (and some other pictures of that trip).

Visit Alcatraz

If you don’t have the time to go away for a whole day or weekend, there is plenty to do in San Fransisco. Alcatraz is my personal favorite; I visited the prison three years ago and I am going again this year. Alcatrazcruises.com offers a limited amount of special ‘night tours’ that start at around 7 pm and provide a more intimate experience. Plus you get to visit Alcatraz at night, which I think is pretty awesome.

Before you go, watch the movie Escape from Alcatraz, a scene from the movie is recreated on Alcatraz. Another great Alcatraz movie is The Rock. One final piece of advice: Alcatraz offers audio tours in many different languages, but I strongly suggest going for the English one, since that one features former staff and inmates that guide you around the place. On my earlier visit I went with the Dutch one, which is the same, but the narrations are voice-overs, which sucked.

That’s it for now, congratulations on making it to the bottom of this post! This weekend, I’m going on a trip to Sequoia National Park, I’ll be sure to let you guys know how that was in my next post.

See you later, or as we would say in The Netherlands: tot ziens!

Koen
