Summer I-House Reunions in Europe – Köln, Germany

This summer I have been very busy with I-House reunions in Europe, and it kicked off with the I-House reunion in Köln, Germany in May.

I-House Executive Director Hans Giesecke and his wife, Susan, were doing a Cal Alumni riverboat tour from Amsterdam to Budapest and 30 of us had the pleasure to join him on a sunny Sunday afternoon for their stop in Köln.

In fact, we took the opportunity of this event to make a weekend reunion. After a short flight from London to Köln I reunited with Lisa, Anna, and Flavia, who came from Hamburg, Barcelona, and Brussels respectively. After enjoying some hot chocolate, Harm from Munich joined us then we decided to check out Kölner Dom. It was a majestic gothic cathedral, with beautiful stained glass windows.

Reunited with Friends from Germany, Spain, and Italy!

The I-House Connection

Hans Giesecke

Dear I-House Friends,

Summer has become one of the busiest times of the year at International House Berkeley.  Summer sessions are now incredibly active on the Cal campus and since many of our summer session students are internationals, I-House is actually at greater capacity in the months of July and August than during the regular academic year.

So, the work of I-House normally accelerates during the latter half of the summer as we put on a host of programs and activities for summer residents and also try to complete a variety of facility improvement projects that we aren’t able to finish during the academic year. This sometimes makes for an interesting tightrope walk that we must take to ensure that we are continuously upgrading this marvelous facility while at the same time taking good care of those short-term residents who are here for approximately six weeks during the summer. Developing Global Leaders at I-House
By Lauren Moloney-Egnatios

When I first walked through the doors of UC Berkeley’s International House as a new staff member, I felt an enormous sense of pride. I knew that I had joined something bigger, a global community dedicated to the values of social justice, inclusivity, and appreciation of difference. It is these values that drove the legendary leaders – Edmonds and Rockefeller – to create the I-House movement. As a trainer in the Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership (CIL), I am humbled to build upon the foundation that was set by these visionaries.

If I had to choose one highlight (there are many) from my first days here, it would be the people. I am overcome with gratitude for my colleagues and the relationships I have developed. I am grateful for a community of diverse residents and staff from all over the world who challenge my assumptions, expand my worldview, and with each interaction, teach me something new. Each day, I see a dedicated, competent staff provide residents with an exceptional learning experience during their time at Berkeley. I am inspired by an incredible spirit of possibility; it is a spirit that encourages me to work harder, dream bigger, and help write the next great chapter of the I-House story.

28th Annual Celebration and Awards Gala

Dr. Marian Diamond

Dr. Marian Diamond (Jim Block photo)

Our annual Gala, held on March 31st, was truly an inspiring evening of laughter, memories, and recognition. Dr. Marian Diamond was awarded the first-ever International House Alumni Faculty Award for the tremendous impact she has had on the field of neuroanatomy, and the countless ways she continues to inspire the entire UC Berkeley community.  Also, for the first time in I-House history, the event shone a light on all I-House alumni who are current UCB faculty members. Pictured below are several of the faculty members or faculty emeriti who were honored, along with UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks (back row, center) and I-House Executive Director Hans Giesecke (back row, left).

We’re happy to share a guest post by the I-House Associate Director of Development, Johnny Avots-Smith.

Johnny Avots-Smith

International House attracts incredible people. In my career, I have worked at several nonprofits and, most recently, another university across the Bay, and I can say that the I-House community of friends and alumni are some of the most interesting and passionate people I have had the opportunity to meet.

In the short time since I joined I-House, I have had the great pleasure of meeting alumni from across the globe and discovering through their stories how one person can have an impact on our entire I-House community.

I recently sat down with several alumni and families of alumni who are working hard to re-publish a book of recollections about the post-World War II era at I-House. Their enthusiasm is infectious and the great care that they have taken to include so many fellow alumni is a testament to the community that I-House fosters.

You too can make a difference at I-House. Whether it’s sharing your fond memories of your time under the dome through 85 Stories for 85 Years, visiting with your friends at a reunion, buying a ticket to the fabulous Gala, or making a gift to ensure that students continue to have access to the incredible experience of living under the dome, your involvement makes a real impact.

I hope you’ll take advantage of one (or all!) of these great opportunities to be involved. If you have another idea to get involved or want to talk about how you can make an impact on I-House’s future, feel free to give me a call at (510) 642-0124 – I’d be glad to talk with you over lunch in our beautiful new Dining Commons!

Staff Spotlight: Chef Jordan Lichman

I’m happy to share a guest post by the I-House Executive Chef, Jordan Lichman. Chef Jordan leads our culinary team to improve the dining experience for our residents and guests.

What’s Cooking at I-House

By Chef Jordan Lichman

I’m really excited to be back in Berkeley and working at such a vibrant place as International House. I was hired in September to assist in realizing the vision of the new renovations in the Dining Commons. The vision of Hans, our Executive Director, is to make the dining experience a central component to bring residents together to increase understanding and appreciation of our different cultures. As both a Chef and a Cal grad who majored in Political Economy of Industrial Societies, I am especially interested in conversations about the intersection of food, politics, and culture. Food is powerful stuff beyond its nutritional value.
